James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1 8 9 8. 1 0 1 L E I C E S T E R S H I R E . OFFICERS FOR 1898.-President : Sir H. de Trafford , Bart. Hon. Treasurer : J. Parsons. Hon. Secretary : T. Burdett, 3, D eMontfort-square , Leicester . LEICESTERSHIRE'S record was identical with that of 1897 in one respect , that victory greeted themonly once during the season . Thoughthey played six- teen instead of fourteen matches only ten were lost , as in the previous year, so that the two additional fixtures went to the account of drawn games. Like Somerset, Leicestershire won one, drew five , and lost ten matches. Unfortu- nately for the side the captain , C. E. De Trafford , never got into form, and the loss of his brilliant hitting had naturally a prejudicial effect on the batting generally . The injury Pougher suffered in 1897 prevented him getting the old devil into his bowling , another andvery serious loss . Thebowling on the whole wasvery weak. Thebatting , on the other hand, though uncertain at times , showed considerable promise , and, with mostly young players , another year ought to see a material development. In this respect the season was not withouthope. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches played , 16 ; won, 1 ; drawn, 5; lost , 10. Opponents. MatchesW o n(1) . (*) Derbyshire Matches Drawn(5).
