James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899
T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1898 9 5 (1) Lancashire v. Leicestershire . Manchester , M a y19, 20 and 21. Leicestershire's all -round cricket for once , during a season of constant ill -success , was of a high order. Theybegan well with the bat, and their total of 318 , under the circumstances , and against the varied bowling of Lancashire , was a good performance . Tomlin was at his very best in making his 106 , and C. J. B. Wood (51) and Brown (38) both played well. Woodcock (62 not out ), too , outdid any of his previous records by his vigorous hitting at the finish . Lancashire's batting , on the other hand, was rather disappointing . Baker (31 ) and Albert Wood (115) made a good start , but the rest mostly failed . Ward's score represented , in fact , more than one -half of the total . Onthe third day the game was several times interrupted by the bad light , and was finally stopped some two hours before the proper time. A tthe endLeicestershire were189 on with five wickets still to fall . Leicestershire , 318 and 90 (5 wickets ) ; total , 408. Lancashire , 219 . Cuttell (Lancashire) Overs. Maidens. 1 0 0 5 3 - (2) Lancashirev. Warwickshire. Liverpool , May 26, 27 and 28. R u n s. 1 0 9 Wickets. 1 0 The Lancashire Eleven were again seen to disadvantage , though it must be admitted they had the worst of the luck . The game from the outset went all in favour of Warwickshire , who after scoring 178 finished up the first day well by getting rid of seven Lancashire wickets for 67. W h e n each side hadhad an innings Warwickshirewere 84 runs on, and as they made 233 whenthey wentin a second time Lancashire's position was rendered still moredifficult . The wicket , too, towards the end wasnot easy, and with 318 to win Lancashire's chances were far from hopeful . A s it was, seven of the best batsmenwere out for 108, and but for a useful stand by Sugg (28) and Cuttell (37 not out) the batting would have been quite a failure . W. G. Quaife (45 and 34), Lilley (41 each time ), A. C. S. Glover(23 and 52), and Devey(22 and 29), were chief scorers for Warwick- shire . Santall's bowling, too, contributed greatly to their success . W a r - wickshire won by 142 runs . Warwickshire , 178 and 233 ; total , 411 . Lancashire , 94 and 175; total , 269. Santall (Warwickshire) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. 5 5 1 8 9 4 (3) Lancashirev. Warwickshire. Birmingham, June 13, 14 and 15. Wickets. 9 Acomplete reversal of the positions occupied in the first match. This time, what little luck there was favoured Lancashire , and the end of the first innings left little doubt as to the result . Considering the quality of their bowling Warwickshire did well to get Lancashire out for 208. They were less successful when they took the field again , This time Baker (63 ), C. R. Hartley (83), Cuttell (55), and W. B. Stoddart (43 not out) all scored freely . Eventually the Captain declared with the total 311 for seven wickets , leaving Warwickshire 382 to win. This was quite beyond their power, though Santall (46 not out ), W. Quaife (35 ), A. C. S. Glover (28), and Lilley (27) played up pluckily . C. R. Hartley (22 and 83) was top scorer for Lancashire ; A. Č. S. Glover (49 not out and 28) for Warwick- shire . Lancashire wonby 204 runs . Lancashire , 208 and 311 (7 wickets , innings declared ) : total , 519. Warwickshire , 138 and 177 ; total , 315. Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 2 8 - 3 9 4 1 Santall (1st inns .
