James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899
9 4 L I L L YWHITE'SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. altogether the bowling, which had not been such a source of strength in 1898, was really the weakpoint of the team. To makematters still worse, the batting was comparatively a failure . Albert Wardplayed consistently good, if at times tedious , cricket . Baker, too , did fairly well , and was generally reliable . Otherwise the old hands were not seen at their best . Sugg played an occasional fine innings , but that was all . A. C. MacLaren , too, whenhe joined the teamin August, did not play up to his form of 1896 or 1897. The most gratifying features of the season were the all -round cricket of Cuttell and the brilliant batting of Tyldesley . Cuttell , on the generally hard wickets , was more expensive as a bowler . As a batsman he showed a marked advance , and was quite one of the best all -round players of the year . Tyldesley was one of the most consistent run-getters of the season , and distinctly in the front rank of the Players . W. B. Stoddart was a useful all -round addition to the Eleven, and in A. Eccles , of the Oxford Eleven , and Hallows , Lancashire has two likely batsmen . Apoisoned hand kept Smith out of the Eleven , but Radcliffe proved a capable substitute at t h ew i c k e t.
