T H E COUNTIESIN 1898. 9 3 was particularly brilliant . H e was only at the wickets an hour and three- quarters , while Douglas was batting four hours and a half for his 153. The bowling of J. T. Hearne and A. E. Trott also contributed largely to the easy victory of Middlesex. The former took 12 wickets at a cost of under 11 runs apiece . Middlesex wonby an innings and 96 runs. Swire. T o retain the Championship necessitates a consistency as well as a high quality of all -round cricket , which Lancashire certainly was not able to show in 1898. Withthe bad luck that followed themit was hardly a surprise to find their record vastly inferior to that of the previous year . The stars in their courses fought against them. They could hardly do right , indeed , throughout the season . Hallamwas lost , in the first place , to the County, and the loss of his bowling was bound to be severely felt . Then Mold injured himself , and he, too , was obliged to stand down, still further weaken- ing the attack . Briggs , too , was nothing like so deadly as of old , so that
