8 6 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. (13) Hampshirev. Sussex. Portsmouth , Aug. 18, 19 and 20. Afairly even match throughout . The wicket was affected by rain for the second half of the game, but each side suffered . Sussex , going in first , got a lead of 58 at the end of an innings , thanks to a good score of 117 by P. H. Latham. This advantage gave them the victory , as what slight difference there was on the second hands favoured Hampshire. H. W. Studd (60 and18) played two useful innings for Hants. Barton (47 and 51), however , had the highest aggregate , and with a little better support at the finish he might have landed the gamefor his side . Asit was, Sussex wonby43 runs. Sussex, 289 and 140 ; total 429. Hampshire, 231 and 155 ; total 386. (14) Hampshirev. Warwickshire. Southampton , Aug. 25, 26 and 27. Warwickshire, getting first use of an excellent wicket , were in all the first and a part of the secondday. In this time they scored 424. Fourbatsmengot sixty or more, but none reached the hundred, though W. G. Quaife got within one ofit . W. Quaife made29, A. C. S. Glover 72, andKinneir 60. Hampshirewere at a double disadvantage in having to bat not only on a difficult wicket , but also in a bad light . Hence it was hardly a surprise that they should have fared badly. As it was, heavy rain on the second night prevented any more play, so that Hampshire were saved from what would probably have been a decisive defeat . Warwickshire , 424. Hampshire, 166 (8 wickets ).
