HAMPSHIRE suffered a very severe loss early in the summer by the sudden death of that most promising young amateur Mr. H. F. Ward. That the season wasone of comparative failure was, perhaps , morethe misfortune than the fault of the management . It was rarely possible to collect the full side , and at one time or other the absence of such all -round cricketers as Capt. Wynyard, Capt. Quinton, Messrs. A. J. L. Hill and Lacey, was boundto be heavily felt . Soar, too , owing to aninjury , wasunable to play in a few matches, wherebythe bowling was greatly weakened. The best feature of the year's cricket was, perhaps , the consistently effective batting of Barton . In Mr. W. Andrew, of Bournemouth , the County introduced a player whose all -round cricket bids fair to be of great service . Hampshire's weakness is still in the bowling , and there was little sign of any new development in this respect , it must be a d m i t t e d.
