James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898
THE COUNTIES IN 1897. 7 9 G L O U C E S T E R S H I R E . OFFICERSFOR 1897.-President : D u k eof Beaufort, K.G. Treasurer: W . H . Harford. Captain : W.G. Grace. Secretary : E. M. Grace. Committee : J. W. Arrowsmith, H. W.Beloe , H. J. Boughton, E. Lawrence, J. A. Bush, E. G. Clarke , T. B. Johnston, E. B. Haygarth, W . D. L. Macpherson, R. Fenton Miles , G. Norman, Rev. C. H. Ridding, Arthur Robinson, E. J. Taylor , F. R. Alderwick , H. E. Thomas, H. V. Page , W. O. Moberly , W .M .B r o w n l e e. GLOUCESTERSHIRE cricket undoubtedly was of a better quality than it has beenfor several years . Their side were apparently better together , and when fully represented the County had seriously to be reckoned with , as the eleven showed on more than one important occasion . W.G.himself was the great cricketer he has been for the last 33 years a wonderful tribute to his transcendentabilities . W h e nable to get all his available forces heh a d, too, a very useful and withal formidable side . Mr. G. L. Jessop's all -round cricket wasmuchabove the average , and if his bowling did not come off , as it rarely failed to do, his exceptional powers of hitting did, and to a remarkable tune. T h ehard and fast wickets were naturally against Mr. C. L. Townsend's slow bowling. Still , he was at times very effective , if not generally up to the standard of two or three years ago. In Mr. F. H. B. Champain, of the Oxford Eleven, Gloucestershire has one of the most likely all -round amateurs of the day. A record of Gloucestershire's cricket in 1897 would be incomplete without a prominent mention of Board's wicket -keeping , which was of a very high quality throughout .
