TheEssex Eleven failed to play anything like up to the formthey had been showing throughout the season , and were easily beaten . They had the advan- tage of going in first , but in other ways had rather the worst of the luck. Essexdidnot get 150 in either innings , and the best aggregate was that of Mr. Fane(29 and 27). Abel (82) andBrockwell (37) put on 76 for Surrey's first wicket, but the total would not have been particularly large but for the tail . Mr.Keyhit freely for 42, and Wood(32 not out) and Richardson played well for the last wicket . Asit was, Surrey wonwith ten wickets to spare . Surrey , 264 a n d10 (no wicket) ; total , 274. Essex, 143 and130; total , 273. Hayward(Surrey) . . . Overs. Maidens. 2 4 8 (13) Essexv. Hampshire. Leyton, Aug.23, 24 and25. R u n s. 6 0 W i c k e t s. 7 Unfortunately for Pickett , the Essex professional , whose benefit it was, rain interfered considerably with the game. Hampshirehad a very weak side with Captains Quinton and Wynyardas well as Mr. Hill , Mr. Lacey, and Soarall away. Bothin batting and bowling they were consequently seen to disadvantage . Altogether fourteen of their wickets realised 240 runs , to which Barton(3 and 50 not out) and Baldwin (31 and 11, in each case not out) were chief contributors . Essex, as was to be expected , made light of Hampshire's bowling . All the seven batsmen whodid go in scored freely . Mr. Perrin made 101, Mr. McGahey61, and eventually the innings was closed with the total 315 and only half the side out. The game was drawn. Essex, 315 (5 wickets , innings closed ). Hampshire, 115 and 125 (4 wickets ) ; total , 240 . B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S . T i m e s M o s tin I n n s. notout. R u n s. a nInns. Average. M r .A . J.
