In1837, 1844, and1888 the matches were not finished . Summary:-Cambridge, 32 ; Oxford, 28; drawn, 3. (7) Etonv. H a r r o w. Lord's, July 9 and 10. O npaper Harrowseemed to have rather the better chance. This time, contrary to the experiences of 1895 and 1896, they had to be content with a moral victory -to be precise , all the best of the draw. Winning the toss gave them, of course , a considerable advantage , and at the end of an innings they hada very useful lead of 76 runs , although less , perhaps ,than at one time seemed probable . The feature of the match wasthe partnership of Cole andDowsonin Harrow's second innings . At the finish Eton had three hours left for batting , and, playing for a draw, accomplished their object with 117 left to get to win and three wickets to fall . The score will be found in Public Schools Matches, in Part II . Harrow, 236 and 248 (4 wickets , innings declared ) ; total , 484. Eton, 160 and 208 (7 wickets ) ; total , 368. (8) Gentlemeny. Players. July 12, 13 and14. A swasnot the case at the Oval , the two teams were thoroughly represen- tative , although Wainwrightwas absent from the Players and Mr. N. F. Druce fromtheGentlemen. Theresult was a run-getting match, and moreover one full of interest throughout . Mr. Ford, it will be seen , scored 129 for the Gentle- m e nwithout being out in either innings . In the second Mr. Jessop made67 in thirty -five minutes. ThePlayers , whogot, of course , anadvantage in going in first , wonby 78 runs .
