WITHthe wickets mostly in favour of run-getting , the season of 1897 wasall in favour of batsmen. Still , in comparison with the summerof 1896, the figures on the whole were perhaps in somesmall degree disappointing . Abel was the only batsman able to reach an aggregate of 2,000 runs, and his record fell considerably short of that of Ranjitsinhji in 1896 , by a matter of 689 runs in fact . All the same, in some respects there wascause for congratulation in the figures of 1897. In addition to his score of 250 Abel got into three figures five times . Wainwright and Ranjitsinhji scored 100 also on five occasions ; Gunn, W. G. Grace, andG. L. Jessop on four ; Brown, G. Brann, Baker, Tyldesley , A. Ward, Bagshaw, W. G. Quaife , and N. F. Druce on three ; and 17 other batsmen twice . Thehighest score of the season in first -class cricket was J. T. Brown's 311for Yorkshirev. S u s s e x.
