F Warnerpersonally conducted to America last autumn is the thirteenth Englishcombination that has visited the States . As was the case with Lord Hawke's party in 1894 and Mr. F. Mitchell's in 1895 , only five matches were played . Of these only the first against the Gentlemen of Philadelphia was lost . In the return several of the best Philadelphians were absent , and the result was reversed . Unfortunately there was no chance of getting anything like a representative Eleven of Philadelphia for a third match, so thathonourswere left easy. All round Mr. Warner's team was fairly strong. In the bowling, with Messrs . Jessop, Bull, and Stocks, there was variety , and of a good quality . But the scores and the averages which follow will give the best idea of the result , as well as the individual performances of the tour :- F I R S TM A T C H . M r .W a r n e r ' sT e a mv.
