James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898
THE UNIVERSITIES AND PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN 1897. 1 6 9 REPTONELEVENIN 1897 .-*J. Eccles : As captain always did his best , but h a dnot sufficient experience to m a k ethe mostof his teamin the field . M u c h improved in batting , playing well on the O. R. tour . Fielded with untiring energy throughout the term. *L. B. Bigg : Scored well in almost every match, andwas undoubtedly the most trustworthy batsmanin the team. Hits hard andclean, but often sacrifices his wicket through over-eagerness . A t first quite out of form with the ball , but bowled with success in the later matches. W . F. Lumsden : A bad starter , but whenset plays good cricket . Useful straight bowler, and gets some work on, but as a rule is far too short . W a s muchmissed in the School matches . G. C. Beloe : Played capitally against Malvern. Withincreased nerve , power, andexperience ought to train into a really good cricketer . At present he has no sting in his batting or bowling . *W. Blackburn : First -rate school wicket -keeper . Plucky bat , scoring most consistently . Of great value to the team. *B. F. Bishop : Verydeficient in strokes . Maderuns in two or three matches, but was very uncertain . Good field . H. Jameson : Smart and energetic field , especially in the country . As a batsmanhas somevery bad faults , which must be cured if he is to be of any real service to his side . *E. A. Ruddle : Proved fairly useful ,but has notmuch real cricket ability . C. F. Hunter: Arough and ready cricketer . Bowledvery fairly at times , and generally got a few runs . R. C. Franklin : Better bowler thanhis analysis shows. Sends downa very difficult ball , and with increased experience and clever handling will get lots of wickets . H. C. Wright : Ratherslow andclumsy at present , but gives promise of being a good bat. R O S S A L L S C H O O L . Captain for 1897.-D. D. Wilson. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
