T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DP U B L I CS C H O O L SIN 1 8 9 7. 1 6 5 MALVERNELEVENIN 1897.-S. H. Day: Hasplayed somebeautiful innings , and scored very consistently . His placing on the leg-side and cuts are excellent , but he has not developed his driving as much as was expected . Probably one of the best bats the School has hadfor some years . *E. E. Apthorp : Has developed his batting powers very conspicuously , and is now one ofthemostdangerous bats in the eleven . His driving and cutting are excellent , but he is weak in back play. As a wicket -keeper he just fails to be quite good. H eis very economical in the matter of byes, but he is not aggressive enough . *W. N. White : Has failed very markedly in run-getting this season , through having adopted a somewhat cramped style , though on one or two occasions he quite recalled the promise of last year. A very fair field . E. W. N. Wyatt: Hasspent most of the term in the Sanatorium, and it is impossible to sayh o wserious aloss hisbatting andbowlinghasbeento the eleven. H eis a cricketer of the highest promise . C. A. Rathbone : A slow leg-break bowler of distinct merit, w h ohas beenmostuseful. Like mostbowlers ofhis kind hebowls manyloose ones , and with the hard wickets and short boundaries has been expensive . Does not vary enough. By no meansan indifferent bat, and fair field . B. A. White Has played some sterling innings on the fast wickets , where his forward play pays, but we have fears of his success on slow wickets . Avery fair point . *W. Stopher : A very fair medium-pace bowler with some curl and spin , but he has been very expensive . Has been handicapped by a strained side . A fair bat and field . *M. W. Graham: A nunorthodox hard-hitting bat , who has played some very useful innings . Has a good eye , and can punish loose bowling . A fair field . *B. L. Williams : Ahard -hitting bat of considerable merit, but is too impatient before he settles down. W h e n set hits with great force all round his wicket . Avery fair field and safe catch . R. Corbett : Oughtto be a better bat than he is, though he has played two or three very useful innings . Is very weak on the leg stump. An excellent field , andcan bowl. G. B. Canny : Shows promise of being an excellent cricketer . Plays very straight , and has some good strokes . Avery fair bowler. G. H. Trevelyan : A useful cricketer , who is good for some runs. Canbowl as a change, and is quite a good field . M A R L B O R O U G H C O L L E G E . Captain for 1897.-W.Prest . R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s. Matches played , 10 ; won, 5 ; drawn, 4; lost , 1.
