T H EUNIVERSITIESA N DP U B L I CS C H O O L SIN 1 8 9 7. 1 5 3 BRIGHTONELEVEN IN 1897.-C. L. A. Smith : His batting shows an improved average , in spite of disappointing collapses . W h e nhe ceases to alternate between brilliant rashness and over-cautious timidity , and settles downto a consistent style , he will be quite first class . His bowling still owes moreto pace than to pitch , but was very successful . H e fielded brilliantly andcaptained well . G. R. Hampson: A steady bat, though not a powerful one, placing the ball well and generally to be counted on in an emergency . His bowling , with its easy delivery and command of pitch , lacks sting . His fielding wasas safe as ever. C. C. MacLeod: His batting average shows little improvement, but undoubtedly he has done well in making more of his defence , while his occasional lapses into Jessop's style have been very refreshing . In bowling he has madea great advance, but is still erratic . Fielded excellently . D. H. R. Giffard : A sneat andcorrect in style as ever, whether in batting , bowling , or fielding , but has gained little in power. R. H. J. Holmes : Cannot get over his inclination to bat wildly at the pitch of the ball , and is easily " yorked." Most energetic field , andhas developed into a useful change bowler . M. C. Kiernander : As wicket -keeper, smart but unsafe . Muchimproved bat , though his style is a vigorous one of his own. C a nfield anywhere. C. S. Young : Hasa most awkwardstyle , but his strength , pluck , and determination give him an astonishing average , and enabled him to winat least two matches for his side . H e is a brilliant fielder in the deep. C. L. Simpson : W a snot so successful with his left -hand slow bowling last season, but still brilliant at point . N o bat. R. Aparicio : Wicket-keeper ; rarely let the ball pass , but is not smart in stumping . Bats energetically , but clumsily . F. L. King : Still crouches in batting , and gets out by doing so, but is a useful field . L. F. P. de Smidt : Left-hand mediumchange bowler, easy delivery , but too simple . Batted stiffly , but with some success . Slow but safefield. C H A R T E R H O U S E S C H O O L . Captain for 1897 , C. F. Ryder. R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s .
