IN 1897.-F. Symes Thompson (captain ) : Notso good this year with gloves as with bat . A. R. Severn : A good hard-hitting bat, and might become a very good bowler . C. S. Probyn : As good on the field as he is in the pavilion . A. S. Hewitt : Shows a markedimprovement as abat, but missed a catch in the deep. H. R. Parkes : Should score hundreds instead of fifties next year ; a splendid cover . C. D. Fisher : Successful towards the end of term as a bat ; his bowling and fielding were invaluable to the side . F. J. Portman : Asteady , almost fast right -handbowler , the prop of the side ; he is not very well backed up by the slips . R. J. Baker: A useful bat, with afine cut ; badfield . W. H. Dixon : Canscore off straight bowling ; is alittle contemptuous of break ; cannot be surpassed as third man; a terror to the runstealer . W. F. Fox: Atail good enoughfor any eleven . G. K. Talbot : Apainstaking bat, and a great help to Fox. J. C. Gilbert : Made164 runs in his curious style ; is a very successful mid-off .
