JOHN'S COLLEGE ELEVENIN 1897.-F. E. Edwardes (captain ): Correct bat with stubborn defence . Watchesthe ball narrowly. Canhit all roundthe wicket , and rarely fails to punish loose bowling . A heavy scorer . J. H. Hayes: Areally good slow bowler, but has not bowled much. Hasbrought off somesmart catches. G. B. Norman: G o o dbat: scores all round the wicket and hits very hard, but is rather apt to lose his wicket by despising the bowling. Good field , especially in the country , and throws in very well . W.A. Rix: Hasborne the brunt of the bowling. Sends down a great many balls on the leg -side , but is hard to hit . Hits hard, buthad a lot of bad luck. G. H. Pethybridge : Has a very clean off -drive . Oughtto makea great m a n y runs behind the wicket , but never got into form. S. C. Moseley : Hasdone morework in the field than anyone. Wouldmakemore runs if he had more faith inhimself. C. H. Moore: G o o dwicket-keeper, but does not m u c hlike erratic bowling . Areally good bat, with sound defence and plenty of hitting power. Hasa very good drive behind point , played from the shoulders , a stroke quite peculiar to himself . His forward stroke looks spoony , but he always keeps the ball down. Ought to score tremendously whenhe gets used toEnglish wickets . W. P. G. McCormick : Agood bat, scoring all round the wicket; fair left -handslow bowler , and a fine field . Oneof the most useful all- round menin the eleven . C. E. Peacock : A hard-hitting run-getting bat, but without manystrokes . A slow field , though safe catch . Bowlswell at times . C. S. P. Franklin : Agood slow bowler. Careful bat , but without muchpower about h i m. H a sc o m eto the rescue morethanonce. Safe field. H. M. Wilkinson : A fair slow mediumbowler . Can keep his wicket up, but is not a run-getter . Sure field .
