James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898
1 3 0 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAL. A Tthe outset it looked as if the YorkshireElevenwouldin all likelihood retain the honours they won in 1896 as the champions of the year. Thefirst doubt wasoccasioned by their reverse at the hands of Essex at Leyton. Adefeat the very next week by the Cambridge Eleven at Cambridge emphasised the fear thattheir all-r o u n dcricketh a db e e na little over-rated. I nthee n dn o less than five matches spelt disaster for them, exclusive of that at Cambridge referred to . Altogether Yorkshire had a very powerful combination beyond a doubt. Inbatting ,on paper it was decidedly stronger . Still , as a side , perhaps , they were not such dangerous run-getters as in 1896, notwithstanding the fine performances of manyof the team. But it wasmore in the bowling that the team showed weakness , if at all . Peel's loss weakened themmaterially , of course , during a great part of the season . In his absence , on the excellent wickets that prevailed , the bowling wason the whole not particularly deadly , andto this defect maybe partially attributed the failure , comparative that is, o ftheside.
