U pto the middle of June Surrey certainly did not seemto possess a teamlikely to have to be seriously reckoned with for the County Championship . But after their defeat at the hands of Yorkshire at Leeds , late in June, they had such a continuous run of success that two months afterwards they seemed again to be pretty sure of the premiership . Towardsthe finish it becamein a great measure a question between Essex, Lancashire , and Surrey . As it happenedSomersetshire , by their victory at Taunton, settled Surrey's preten- sions , leaving them second to Lancashire . All the same, on the form they showed during the latter part of the season Surrey's all -round cricket was of a very high class . The out-cricket was distinctly better . Thefielding was morereliable , and in Lees the County found a bowler of great use to help Richardson, Hayward, and Brockwell . Theaddition of Mr. D. L. A. Jephson strengthened the all -round cricket of the side . In batting the eleven were un- deniably strong ,and a little morereliable , too, whenthe wicket was not quite of thebest. Thoughhe had intervals of failure Abel's batting was one of the best features of the year. H ewas the only cricketer whoscored 2,000 runs in first -class cricket.
