Inthe absence of Mr. Lionel Palairet and Mr. Fowler Somersetshire gave a trial to three Oxonians , Messrs. Porch, Hook, and Portman. Though the weather was bad, the wicket did not favour the batsmen as much as might have been expected . Still , the scoring was fairly high , although the best individual innings was 67. Somersetshire did moderately well to make 213 at the outset. Nichols, of Somerset, was the mostsuccessful batsmanof the matchwith 35 and54. Most of the Oxford Eleven maderuns, with Mr. A. Eccles (67 not out) the best of them. Oxford won by seven wickets . Oxford Uni- versity , 270 and 135 (3 wickets ) ; total ,405. Somersetshire , 213 and 189 ; total , 4 0 2. (8) Somersetshire v. Philadelphians. Bath, July 19, 20 and 21. A tthe outset the wicket bumpedconsiderably , so muchso that Mr. King, the Philadelphian fast bowler , was taken off after a short time by the captain . Asit was, rain stopped play on the first day with Somersetshire 78 for two wickets . Though the game was interrupted on the second day the County managedto reach a total of 200, mainly through an excellent score of 66 by Mr. R. Palairet . In the two hours left for the Philadelphians that day they put on 107 for the loss of one batsman, Mr. Wood, whose57 were thoroughly well got. Mr. G. S. Patterson , not out 48, added four the next morning,but rain only allowed of a little more play , and the gamewas drawn creditably for the Philadelphians . Somersetshire , 200.
