Of their double victory over Surrey too muchcannot be said , as they wonboth matches thoroughly well , and the first (at the Oval) quite on their merits by excellent all -round cricket . But, with the exception of their defeat of Kent at Taunton, their successes ended there . They won, in fact , only three of their sixteen Inter -County matches. Altogether their cricket showed a great falling off in comparison with the previous year. It was mostly in the batting , perhaps , that the teamfailed . Mr. L. C. Palairet was away for a time in the middle of the season , to the great loss of his side . H ewas again at the head of the Bat- ting Averages, but with considerably reduced figures . Otherwise , too , the batsmen generally failed to show up as well as in 1896. Thebowling , which has not been particularly deadly of late years , kept up its character , but here there was, perhaps , no great cause for disappointment . Still , it would at times have been much more successful had the fielding , which was somewhat variable , been a little more reliable . R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
