James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1 8 9 7. 1 1 3 77 was the result of sound cricket , but it was quite eclipsed by Abel's performance . He was batting in all for five hours and thirty -five minutesfor his 215, andbarring a chance whenhe had made37 his batting was faultless . Unfortunately for Notts, William Gunn, owing to illness , was unable to bat in their first innings , and though he did go in for the second he was obviously off colour . Shrewsbury was in his best form , and his scores of 55 and 69 were both in every wayworthy of him. Guttridge and J. G u n n added 83 for the ninth wicket , which, in W . Gunn's absence , wasthe last in the first innings of Notts . Of these Guttridge contributed 60 by vigorous hitting . Altogether 1,021 runs were scored in the match for 31 wickets . Surrey, 451 and 61 (1 wicket) ; total , 512. Notts, 212 and 297 ; total , 509. (7) Notts v. Philadelphians. Nottingham , July 12, 13 and 14. Mr. Dixon was away from the County Eleven , as were Shrewsbury , W. G u n n, andAttewell. I ntheabsenceofAttewelloccasion wastakento re- intro- duce the veteran Alfred Shaw, who showed that he could still keep a good length and keep the runs down . Under the circumstances the Philadelphians were seen to great advantage , particularly with the bat . G. S. Patterson was easily first with 162, and A. M. Wood (100 ) and F. H. Bohlen (61 ) as -his best assistants . Notts , too , had an innings of a hundred in J. Gunn's secondscore of 107. A tthefinish Nottswere72 runsonwithtwowickets still to fall . Philadelphians , 421.
