James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1 8 9 7. 1 0 9 (4) Middlesexv. Yorkshire. Sheffield , Auy. 16, 17 and 18. Adraw, and moreover one fairly satisfactory to both sides . Yorkshire got first use of an excellent wicket , and took advantage of it to the extent of a total of 366. T h e bulk of the runs c a m efromthree batsmen, Mr. Jackson (101), Wainwright(60), and Denton (50). Middlesex , too, started well , Messrs . H a y m a n(56) and Warner(46) putting on a hundred in an hour for the first wicket. But no one else except Mr. R. S. Lucas (46 not out) did much, so that theyhad after all to follow on. Yorkshire's second innings closed on the fall of the sixth wicket , and was chiefly notable for Denton's 72, all well got. At the finish Middlesex were left with 302 to get to win, and three hours anda quarter left for play. This time Messrs . Haymanand Warner were not so successful , but Mr. J. Douglas (102) and Rawlin (62) played so well that no other wicket was got. So Middlesex madea very creditable draw of it . York- shire , 366 and 182 (6 wickets , innings declared ) ; total , 548. Middlesex , 247 and 219 (2 wickets ); total , 466. (5) Middlesexv. Notts. Nottingham, Aug. 19 , 20 and 21 . The chief feature of the matchwas the successful début of Webb, a young slow bowler engaged on the Lancashire's County Ground, for Middlesex . Notts lost the toss , but managedall the same to get a lead of two runs on the first innings , a success due to a very fine score of 162 by Mr. A. O. Jones . At the finish Nottsh a dto get 168 to winon a wicket whichwasnot easy. A ttheout- set , too, they threw awaytheir chances to a great extent by losing Shrewsbury andMr. Jones, both of them run out. These early failures hadnaturally a prejudicial effect on the rest of the batsmen, and the result was a moderate total of 111. Mr. P. F. Warner(79 and 11), Rawlin (84 and 4), and Mr. G. McGregor(31 and 42), were the best scorers for Middlesex . W e b bbowled with remarkable success , as his figures below will show. Middlesex wonby 56 runs. Middlesex , 296 and 169 ; total , 465.
