Unfortunately for Leicester- shire Pougherhad injured his foot just before , and his all -round cricket was a severe loss to Leicestershire . Theywere out of luck in addition in losing the toss , so that the chances were altogether against them. Surrey opened the season auspiciously with a big total of 560. Abel was the chief contributor with 144, and Hayward(80), Messrs . Key(66), W. W.Read(62), and Leveson Gower (53) also scored well . The Leicestershire batsmen, with one exception , could do nothing with the bowling of Richardson and Hayward. Theexception was Tomlin, whosefirst score of 70 was an admirable display of cricket . Surrey w o nby an innings and 285 runs. Surrey, 560. Leicestershire , 197 and78; total, 275. WithPougherstill away and the luck of the toss again on the other side , Leicestershire had a poor look out at the start . Theydid fairly well at the outset in getting rid of Mr. Jackson , Tunnicliffe , Denton, and Wainwrightfor only 98 runs. There, however, their successes ended. Moorhouse (91), Peel (115), and Hirst (89) subsequently punished their bowling severely , with in the result a total of 435. Against this Leicestershire could do very little . The chief score in the first innings was Brown's 36, and curiously the best aggre- gate fell to one of the bowlers , Coe, with 20 not out and 32. Yorkshire wonby an innings and 129 runs. Yorkshire , 435. Leicestershire , 124 and 182 ; total , 3 0 6.
