THE Lancashire Eleven wonthe County Championship, and, it m a yfairly be added, on their merits . O nthe whole, their all-round cricket was certainly equal to that of the most successful of the other shires . The batting ,perhaps , wasnot quite so reliable , and on occasions the tail was hardly up to the stan- dard of recent years . It wasto their out-cricket more than anything that they owedthe chief part of their success . In bowling Lancashire was undoubtedly the strongest County of the year. Moldwas, unfortunately , handicapped for some portion of the season owing to an accident , and this only served to emphasise their strength as a bowling side . As it was, even with Mold away, theyhad three really good bowlers in Briggs , Cuttell , and Hallam. The figures of this trio will compare more than favourably with those of three bowlers of any other shire of 1897. The bulk of the run-getting was done by Mr. MacLaren, Albert Ward, Baker, Tyldesley , and FrankSugg. Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches played , 26 ; won, 16 ; drawn , 7 ; lost , 3.
