James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898
THE COUNTIESIN 1897. 9 7 (16) K e n tv. Philadelphians. Maidstone, July 26, 27 and 28. Fortune sided with Kent in this instance , and losing the toss meantthe loss of the match to the Philadelphians . In going in first Kent were able to bat on an easy wicket , with in the result a big score of 454. Anoteworthy incident occurred at the very commencementof the match. Mr. Tonge, whowent in first , had a bone in his hand broken with a fast ball from Mr. Cregar. The Philadelphian captain at once offered to allow Kent to play someone in his place , a courtesy which was accepted . Mr. Mason (92) laid the foundation of Kent's large total , and Mr. G. J. V. Weigall (138 not out) and Easby(73), later o nmaderuns freely off the Americanbowlers . B ythe time the turn of the Philadelphians came to bat the wicket hadbegunto favour the bowlers consider- ably . Still , the Philadelphians madea very plucky attempt to save the game, andwith a little luck might have done so. Mr. J. A. Lester's batting was one of the best features of their cricket . He madethe highest score (66 and69) each innings , and in the first Mr. Bohlen (49) and he were responsible for 115 of 160 from the bat. Kent wonby an innings and nine runs. Kent, 454. Philadelphians , 168 and 277 ; total , 445 . B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S . T i m e s I n n s. n o to u t. R u n s. Mr.S. H .D a y 5 1 - 1 4 1 M o s tin a nInns. 1 0 1* Average. 35.25 M r .J.
