Kent got first use of a fine wicket , andMr. Mason(65) andAlec Hearne began byscoring 90 in a little over an hour for the first wicket . Thencame a great collapse , and indeed the only double figure subsequently was that of Mr. G. J. Mordaunt , who carried out his bat for an exceedingly well-hit 81. Surrey , in their turn , opened none too well , as at the end of the first day the score was 118 with four good batsmen out. The partnership of Baldwin and Mr. Jephson on the second morning workeda complete change. Thetwo batsmen put on 230 runs , and after losing Mr. Jephson for 102 Baldwin was caught , having made234 in six hours . The last five batsmen, too, all scored freely , with the result a large total of 617, Kent's only chance then was to save the game. But this they failed to do, although Martin (57 not out), Wright, Messrs. H. C. Stewart and Livesay , all played up pluckily . In the match 1,086 runs were scored for thirty wickets . Surrey w o nby an innings and 148 runs . Surrey , 617. Kent, 217 and 252, total ,469. (10) K e n tv. Lancashire. Canterbury , Aug. 2, 3 and 4. Kentwere unlucky enough to lose the toss , and had to field all the first day. Lancashire's total then was 390 for nine wickets , of which Mr. MacLaren's share was244. WithA. Ward(47) he put on 144 for the first wicket , and he himself was out in the last over of the day. Mr. MasonandAlec Hearne, each of w h o mgot 51, made a good start for Kent, scoring 82 before they were separated . Subsequently none but Martin (32), Mr. G. J. Mordaunt (37), and Wright (13), got double figurres , and the last nine wickets only added 117. In the follow on Mr. Mason and Alec Hearne again made a promising commencementfor Kent, who, at the end of the second day, hadscored 53 without a wicket . Unfortunately Mr. Mason, who again played very fine cricket for 86, found no one to stay with him, so that Lancashire hadno occasion to go in a second time.
