James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1897. 9 3 (2) K e n tv. Lancashire. Manchester, June 7, 8 and 9. Like most of the matches begun on Whit Monday this was utterly spoiled by rain . No play was possible on the second or third day, which was par- ticularly unfortunate , as Lancashire had given Frank Sugg the receipts for his benefit . O n the first day295 runs were scored for fourteen wickets . Kent would have fared very badly had it not been for a fine innings of 80 by Marchant. In a bad light Lancashire lost Sugg, Mr. Tindall andWardfor ten runs . Baker (37) and Tyldesley (49 not out), however , hit away freely , so that Lancashire had rather the best of the gameas far as it went. Kent, 192. Lancashire , 103 (4 wickets ). (3) Kentv. Yorkshire. Halifax, June 10, 11 and 12. Kenthadnot only a weak team, but, in losing the toss , all the worst of the luck. Yorkshire's total of 279, to which Tunnicliffe contributed 92 andHirst 68, indeed , as the weather subsequently was, left the result beyonda doubt. As it was, Easby (19 and 23) had scored the best aggregate for Kent, though Mr. J. R. Mason's first innings of 28 wasthe highest individual score . York- shire wonby an innings and 103 runs. Birmingham, June 14, 15 and 16. A fairly high scoring match, and one not without a certain amount of interest throughout . Kent, who wonthe toss , had to thank their first pair of batsmen, Mr. J. R. Mason(63 and 37) andAlec Hearne (53 and69) for a good deal of their success in run-getting , though Mr. Livesay also played extremely well in the first innings for 60. The Warwickshire captain was fittingly the best manon his side . He scored 81 of 200 from the bat in the first innings , andwasnot out for 50 in the second . The gamewas drawn. Kent, 285 and 194 (8 wickets , innings declared ) ; total , 479. Warwickshire, 207 and 186 (4 wickets ) ; total , 393. (5) Kentv. Notts. Gravesend, June17, 18 and 19. A splendid wicket , and as a consequence some exceptionally high run- getting . Kentwere in nearly all the first dayfor a total of 406, to which Mr. Burnupcontributed 108, Martin 90, and Mr. Livesay 63. Notts, who began badlyon the second night bylosing four wickets for 36, would have madea sorry show but for Mr. Dixon. Mr. Masonbowled with remarkable success , andonly Mr. Dixon, who was batting for three hours and five minutes for 102, seemed able to play him at all . Notts who had to follow on with a huge sum of 238 against them, were seen to great advantage on the second night, Mr. Jones (75) and Shrewsbury (77) putting on 175 for a wicket . It was bad luck for themthat Shrewsbury was too unwell to continue his innings on the third day. Fortunately Mr. Dixon (91) again played very fine cricket , and Attewell
