James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1898
9 2 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. IF in somerespects there was some slight improvement in comparison with 1896 , still , Kent's record for 1897 gave little real gronnd for satisfaction , much less hope . The nineteen matches they played only produced three victories against ten defeats . At the best Kent can put a strong batting side at least into the field , but even as run-getters they were disappointing , on several important occasions particularly so . Mr. C. J. Burnup's departure for South Africa after the Inter -University match deprived the Countyin its later matches of one of quite its most reliable batsmen. O nthe other hand, in another Malvernian , S. H. Day, the captain of the School Eleven, Kent introduced a youngster likely , on the exceptional promise he showed in his first match, to be of great use. Kent's great source of weakness was in its bowling. O n the run-getting wickets prevalent throughout the summer Martin, Wright, and Mr. Shine were none of them formidable . Mr. W. M. Bradley , who only played very rarely , on one occasion at least was of great service . That was against Middlesex at Tonbridge, when his fast bowling played no unimportant part in one of Kent's few successes . O n the whole the out-cricket was capable of great improvement, for the fielding was at times very faulty . Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
