A L T O G E T H E Rthe EssexElevenh a d little cause to be dissatisfied with their performances in 1896. To begin with , they wonmore matches than they lost . But, beyondthat , most oftheir victories were decisive , and no better proof could be seen of their all -round cricket than that they beat Yorkshire and Surrey, as well as Derbyshire , Leicestershire and Warwickshire. Witha very useful batting side already , they received additional strength by the introduc- tion of a young amateur, P. Perrin , whoplayed really good cricket throughout . Mr.F.G.Bull bowled with great success throughout , and with Meadand Mr. Kortright in addition Essex had three bowlers all of w h o mcould be thoroughly relied on. Essexhad altogether a good working all -round side , and there is noreason whythey should not be seen better . Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
