WITHthe wickets mostly in favour of run-getting the batsmen were bound to show to advantage . As in 1895 , Mr. W. G. Grace and Abel both obtained aggregates of over 2,000 runs . Still , neither had quite such a record as in the previous year. Both, too , were outdone by K. S. Ranjitsinhji , who got 2,780 runs in 46 completed innings . This is a record for first -class cricket , surpassing that of Mr. W. G. Grace's best performance . Altogether 36 batsmen got over 1,000 and under 2,000 runs . This is a slight improvement onthe numbers of 1895 , but it must be remembered that several of the Australians figure in this list . Messrs . F. S. Jackson , Stoddart , Mason, Lionel Palairet , and Sir T. C. O'Brien all upheld their reputations as reliable run-getters . Of amateurs of more recent date Messrs . C. J. Burnup and A. O. Jones were the most noticeable . Of the professionals , Gunn, Storer , Chatterton , Hayward, Shrewsbury , Davidson , Sugg, Peel , Pougher , Brockwell, Tunnicliffe , Baker, Denton, and Albert W a r dhad the best aggregates Hirst , Killick , and Baker are additions to the list of scorers ofover 1,000 runs in a season . O f the Australian team, Messrs . Gregory, Darling , Hill , Iredale , Trott , Giffen , and Donnan all got over 1,000 . Darling's 1,555 for 52 completed innings was the best aggregate on their side .
