T H EG A M E . 1.-Amatchis played between two sides of 11players each,unless otherwise agreed to . Each side has two innings , taken alternately , except in the case provided for in L a w53. Thechoice of innings shall be decided by tossing . R U N S . 2 .-Thescore shall be reckoned by runs. A run is scored :- 1. So often asthe batsmanafter a hit , or at any time while the ball is in play, shall have crossed and made good their ground from end to end. 2.-For penalties under Laws16, 34, 41, andallowances under 44. Anyrun or runs so scored shall be duly recorded by scorers appointed for the purpose . The side which scores the greatest numberof runs wins the match. N omatchis wonunless played out or given up, except in the case provided for in L a w45. A P P O I N T M E N T O F U M P I R E S . 3.-Before the commencementof the matchtwoumpires shall be appointed o n efor e a c he n d, T H EB A L L. 4.-Theball shall weigh not less than five ounces and a half, nor more thanfive ounces and three -quarters . It shall measure not less than nine inches , normorethan nine inches andone-quarter in circumference . Atthe beginning of each innings either side m a ydemanda newball . T H EB A T. 5.-Thebat shall not exceed four inches and one-quarter in the widest part; it shall not be morethan 38 inches in length . T H EW I C K E T S . 6.-Thewickets shall be pitched opposite and parallel to each other at a distance of 22 yards . Eachwicket shall be eight inches in width, and consist ofthree stumps , with two bails upon the top . The stumps shall be of equal andsufficient size to prevent the ball passing through, 27 inches out of the ground. Thebails shall be each four inches in length , and, whenin position onthe top of the stumps , shall not project more than half -an-inch above them. T h ewickets shall not be changed during a match unless the ground between thembecomeunfit for play, andthen only by consent of both sides . T H EB O W L I N G C R E A S E . 7.-Thebowling crease shall be in a line with the stumps; 6 feet 8 inches inlength ; the stumps in the centre ; with a return crease at each end, at right angles behind the wicket . T H EP O P P I N GC R E A S E. 8. Thepopping crease shall be markedfour feet fromthe wicket , paralle to it, anddeemedunlimited in length .
