James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annaul 1897

2 2 0 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. C a p eT o w n Port Eliz'th . PortEliz'th . Pretoria Johannesb'g Kimberley C a p eT o w n T h emost successful all -round cricketers of the team were Mr. A. J. L. Hill and Hayward. The latter looked like having the best batting average , but wasbeaten " on the post " by Mr. Hill with a fine innings of 124 in the final test match . As it was, Mr. Fry, as already stated , was the most con- sistent batsman . Considering the number of times they were pitted against odds , the difference between the wickets they had to play onas compared withthose they are accustomed to at home, and the climatic influences of light and heat , the batting averages were generally very good . Lohmann's bowling was quite out of the common. Altogether he took 157 wickets at an average cost of under seven runs. W h e nit is noticed that the nearest approach to himin the aggregate of wickets was Mr. H. R. Bromley-Daven- port with 46 the full force of his remarkable performance will be felt .
