1 8 2 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. RUGBY SCHOOL ELEVEN IN 1896 .-*J. Stanning (1894-5-6 ) : Rendered invaluable services to the team as a batsman, but was perhaps rather uncertain . A careful watcher of the ball . H e cuts particularly well , but is rather weak on the leg stump. Very fair field . Exceedingly keen and energetic captain . *C. P. Nickalls (1894-5-6 ) : A brilliant dashing batsman, hitting hard all round the wicket , but particularly strong on the off -side . Playedsomereally fine innings whenthe wickets were hard, but not so good on soft grounds . Hard-working field . *N. Fletcher (1894-5-6 ) : At the beginning of the season seemed to have completely lost his length , but quite regained his form by the end of the year, whenhis medium-paced right -hand deliveries met with great success . Wonderfully improved batsman, whose forcing tactics were frequently successful . Fair field . E. R. Wilson (1895-6 ) : Areally sound bat ; cuts very well, and with increased strength promises to play finely all round the wicket . Bowls slow right , with excellent judgment andcontrol over the ball . Very fair field ; likely to improve. *H. V. Spencer (1895-6 ): Goodmedium-paced left -hand bowler, who bore the brunt of the work. Onhis day very deadly , but at times (and particularly towards the close of the season ) hadrather a fancy for long-hops on the leg side . Improved batsman, with a markedpreference for the on-side . Fairfield . W. E. Wilson- Johnston (1896 ) : Useful batsman; very strong on the leg side , and possessing a pretty cut, but on the whole unreliable . Safe field in the country , but rather slow. K. S. Singh (1896) : Very promising wicket -keeper . Unfortunately prevented from playing muchby injuries , which also affected his batting . In the latter department of the gamehe did not do himself justice . Should be good next year . W. G. Cobb (1896 ) : Apromising batsman , with several good strokes , but at present lacks strength . Good field at cover -point , and fair change bowler (slow right ). *E. G. Parton (1896 ) : Adisappointing cricketer . Fast and expensive bowler . Improving bat , with nice style . Smart and energetic in the field . *G. H. Walford (1896 ) : Played some good innings on critical occasions , notably against Marlborough , but was very uncertain . Poor field . *J. L.
