Smith : H a scome on wonderfully since last year in batting ; times the ball beautifully , and has pretty strokes all roundthe wicket . Still , however, begins timidly , and has not yet reached his full hitting power. In bowling he has improved, but trusts to pace more thanto pitch . Excellent field and captained well. R. A. B. Henry : Possesses invaluable steadiness and patience , and a straight defence , and has shown an increase of hitting power. Cannot cover muchground in the field . G. R. Hampson: A good bat, possessing both eye and wrist , but proved somewhat disappointing , possibly through over -confidence . Excellent bowler , with easy action and command of break and pitch . Safe field . *D. J. Crump : Played onegood innings , but generally seemed afflicted with nerves , which was a pity , as hehas a good eye and great power, and hits clean . Stylish field , butnot infallible . Very fair wicket -keeper . *M. C. Kiernander : A smart wicket- keeper and active fielder anywhere , but a fluky bat. *C C. Mac Cleod : Amostpromising bat , with great reach and power , and straightforward easy action, but at present rather weakin defence . Bowls easily , but not craftily . Excellent field . H.R. J. Holmes : Bats pluckily and hard, but does not time the ball well . Energetic in the field , though rather slow. Erratic bowler. C. S. Young : A powerful slogger , but susceptible to slows . Invaluable as a deep-fielder . D. H. R. Giffard : A steady painstaking bat, without much power at present , but with a correct style of defence . Very neat fielder , and can bowl. C. L. Simpson : Bowls left -handslows with a big break, and is learning to vary his deliveries . Lazy fielder , constantly surprising himself and everyone b ybrilliant catches at point . N o bat. *H. B. Neume: Bowls with spin and break, but cannot stand being hit . Useful fielder , but timid bat, though he hasplenty of reach and power.
