Played admirably fromstart to finish , andtimeafter timewasseen at his best at a crisis . A t cover-point both quick and safe . Hasdone a great deal for Oxford cricket . G. J. Mordaunt (Wellington and University ): Hardly played up to his form of the previous year, but at his best a very attractive batsman. As a fielder has nosuperior . H. K. Foster (Malvern and Trinity ) : A brilliant batsman, but apt to be careless . Played some fine innings for the 'Varsity . Slowin the field . P. F. Warner (Rugbyand Oriel ) : Hardlyfulfilled his promise of last year. Is a sound player all round the wicket , and a capital field . R. P. Lewis (Winchester and University ) : Kept wicket better than ever , and was seen at his best v. Cambridge . Greatly improved as a bat . G. R. Bardswell (Uppingham and Oriel ) : Wonderfully improved as a bat , driving with great vigour . Brilliant field at slip . Seems to have quite lost his bowling . Captain for 1897 . F. H. E. Čunliffe (EtonandN e w) : O nthis year's formone of the best left- handed bowlers in England . Did a wonderful performance v. Surrey at Oxford. Goodfield andfair bat. P. S. Waddy(Australia and Balliol ) : H a d a very successful season . Most useful all -round memberof the eleven
