James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annaul 1897

1 4 4 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S' A N N U A L. THE Yorkshire Eleven won the first place in Countycricket on their merits . As a batting side they were particularly strong , with likely run-getters to the very last m a n. Theybegan none too promisingly with a narrow victory by two wickets over Lancashire , but after that they scored heavily , and their record , during the latter part of the season in particular , was an almost unbrokensuccession of triumphs . Out of 26 matches 16 were won, seven drawn, andonly three lost . Thethree defeats were at the hands of Essex, Notts , and Surrey, and the last -namedwas the only Countynot beaten by Yorkshire . Of the seven drawn games one at least -that with Hampshire-was amoral defeat . In batting , as already remarked, the eleven were decidedly strong , and it is noteworthy that five of them had aggregates of over a thousand runs . York- shire's innings of 887 against Warwickshire, it m a ybe added, is a record for first -class cricket . Thebowling on good wickets wasnot so deadly, and in this connection it deserves to be noted that Storer for Derbyshire and K. S. Ranjitsinhji for Sussex each got two hundreds in a match against Yorkshire . InHaigh the County introduced a bowler of great promise , as his figures will show. Towards the end of the season he fell off , but still , on good wickets , he bowled consistently well in the middle of the season , and is sure , with ordinary luck, to be a great acquisition to the side .
