June18, 19 and20. Inwinningthe toss the Australians , as it happened, got the worst of the wicket. It wasdifficult whenthey went in at the start , and after losing seven wickets for 53 the total reached 138, thanks to Messrs. C. J. Eady(41) and Jones towards the finish . Through the good play of Gunn(69) andW . G. Quaife (68) the Midland eleven hadmade168 for three wickets at the end of the first day. Thencame a collapse so complete that the remaining batsmen only added 99 runs. N oless than 129 behind, the Australians , whenplay ceased onthesecond night , hadonly made 142 for the loss of six of their best bats- m e n. Theywere then only 13 on, but Messrs. Hill (98) andJones (36 not out) gave a lot of trouble , with the result an addition of 112 for the last four wickets . Wanting 126 to win six Midland batsmen were dismissed before the runs weregot.
