T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1 8 9 6. 1 2 3 N O T T I N G H A M S H I R E . OFFICERS FOR 1896.-President : The Bishop of Southwell. Committee : H. A. Cursham, W. E. Denison, Dr. Dixon, J. A. Dixon, R. Edwards, W. H. Hollins , J. S. Hutchinson , S. McCrae, T. Potter , G. M. Royle , Capt . Tomasson , C. W. Wright . Hon. Secretary and Treasurer : W. Wright , Esq., Wollaton . Secretary : H. Turner , Lucerne House, West Bridgford . A rtimes the all -round cricket of the Notts Eleven afforded some small hope that they were capable of muchbetter things than in 1895. But, at the best , they were something of an uncertain quantity . To some extent they were still unlucky . Though Gunnhad the highest batting average he was not in the best of health , and had to stand out of several matches . Shrewsbury was able to play pretty regularly , but he was not such a formidable batsman as of old, although his cricket was of a high order . Mr. A. O. Jones showed him- self to be a greatly improved bat . Hewas one of the most reliable batsmen indeed , and not far off the best all -round cricketer on the side . Mr. C. W. Wright was generally to be relied on for runs . Mr. Dixon was, on the other hand, hardly as dangerous . Daft played one fine innings against Surrey at the Oval, but otherwise was a bit disappointing . Attewell occasionally scored well , and Pike's hitting in one or two matches was of great service . But Notts had an unmistakable tail . In bowling Attewell was the mainstay of the side . Considering the generally easy wickets his figures were worthy of his best days . Hardstaff , too , bowled generally with success , and the introduction of S. Brownhelped the all -round cricket of the side . Guttridge's inclusion , too, was of some use . Opponents .
