James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annaul 1897
1 1 6 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. L E I C E S T E R S H I R E . President : Sir A. R. Palmer, Bart. Hon. Secretary : T. Burdett, 21, Saxe- CoburgStreet , Leicester . T H Erecord of the Leicestershire Eleven wasfar fromencouraging . Technically Sussex occupied a lower place , but the Sussex Eleven had a heavier programme to carry through, and some of their performances were of a very high order. Outof 14matches only two were won, one by a wicket , the other by 21 runs. O n eat least of the four drawngames, too, was all agaiust them, and, of the matches lost , in three they were morethan an innings behind , in a fourth ten wickets . In manywaysthe cricket was disappointing . Mr. D e Trafford , in the early part , hit with his old success , but latterly was out of luck . Tomlin batted fairly well , but the best bat on the side was Pougher. Knight's defence wasvery useful , and as he is painstaking he is sure to improve . The bowling wasnot as formidable as it was. Woodcock's pace proved very effective at the outset ,but later on he proved expensive . Pougherwas not at his best , owing tosomeextent to a sprain , and Mr. Hillyard and Geeson, on the run-getting wickets mostly prevalent , were not difficult . The fielding at times was suscep- tible of great improvement. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches played , 15 ; won, 2 ; drawn, 5 ; lost , 8 . Opponents. MatchesW o n(2) .
