Thefirst day's play was all in favour of Lancashire , who at the finish were20 ahead of Sussex with only two batsmenout. Therain permitted very little play in the second day, and when the game was resumed the Sussex bowlers fared badly . Eventually Lancashire's innings was closed at 345 for four wickets , Paul not out 107. The remainder of the game wasnoticeable for the batting of Ranjitsinhji . Though he had a bad finger heplayed in perfect style , and his 165 not only saved the game for Sussex , but madeit look fairly well under the circumstances . Sussex , 153 and 259 (8wickets ) ; total , 412. Lancashire , 345 (4 wickets , innings closed ). (13) Lancashirev. Surrey. Oval, Aug. 20, 21 and 22. A ninteresting match throughout , with a very exciting finish . Surrey ingoing in first , as the wicket was, had the worst of the luck , and on an improving wicket Lancashire headed them by 53 runs . W h e nSurrey went inasecond time rain had again affected the wicket , and Briggs and Mold found no one but Abel, who played fine cricket for 47, to withstand them . Though Lancashire had only to make 60 at the finish , it looked for a long time as if they would not get them. The third , fourth , fifth and sixth wickets all fell at thirty , and Surrey seemed to have the game well in hand, thanks to the fine bowling . But Mr. McLaren (32) and Briggs (12) played with great judgment at the crisis , and wonthe match for Lancashire by four wickets . Baker (83 not out) was principal scorer in Lancashire's first innings . Lancashire , 225 and 60 (6 wickets ) ; total , 285. Surrey , 172 and 112; total , 284. Hayward(2ndinns. Lancs.)
