C.Robson, G. F. Mortimer, J. A. Fort, Capt. L. Russell , Major Bethune, H.Holmes, A. J. L. Hill . Hon. Sec .: Dr. H. W. R. Bencraft . REPRESENTEDat the best Hampshirehas an eleven likely to makea big score at any time. Captains Wynyardand Quinton are both dangerous batsmen, andbesides these are Mr. Robson, Barton, and Mr. H. F. Wardreliable run, getters . Still , the tail was very noticeable at times , although Soar's batting w a sat times very useful . It is a pity Mr. F. E. Laceyplays so rarely now, as his presence would greatly strengthen the side . Unfortunately , Captains Wynyardand Quinton could not play in all the matches , and when they were awaythe cricket suffered greatly . Still , the eleven did several good perform- ances. They beat Sussex and Essex both twice and Leicestershire once. But their best show was against Yorkshire at Southampton. Mistakes on the field robbed them of a victory , but as it was they had immensely the best of the draw. Capt. Wynyard's 268 against Yorkshire was a splendid innings . It was the fourth highest score in County cricket in 1896 . Hampshire's bowling on a good wicket was not deadly . There was room , too, at times for an improvement in the fielding . Opponents.
