Thoughthe Players could have been muchstronger , the eleven was all round fairly strong . They had J. T. Hearne , Briggs , Mead, Pougher , and Davidson to bowl, and against these five the Australian total of 454 was dis- tinctly creditable . Iredale (171 ) and Darling (70), the first two batsmen , laid the foundation , and the pair put on 117 for the first wicket . Subsequently Trott (64 not out ), Gregory (46), and Kelly (25 ) gave the Players trouble , with theresult in the end of a total of 454. The batting of the Players was no less disappointing than their bowling . Jones' pace was too muchfor some of themeach time, andthe two Derbyshire men-Storer (62 and34), Chatterton (39 and 3), and with Pougher (43 and 0), were the chief run-getters . The Australians won by an innings and 137 runs . Australians , 454. Players , 197 and 120; total , 317.
