James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

S4 LILLY WHITE'S CRICKETERS’ ANNUAL. V GLOUCESTERSHIRE. O f f ic e r s f o r 1895.— President: Duke of Beaufort, K.G. Vice-President: Lord Fitzhardinge. Treasurer: W. H. Harford. Captain: W. G. Grace. Secretary: E. M. Grace. Committee: J. W. Arrowsmith, H. W. Beloe, 11. d. Houghton, E. Lawrence, J. A. Bush. E. G. Clarke, Henry Grace, E. B. Haygarth, W . D. L. Macpherson, T. G. Matthews, R. Fenton Miles, G. Norman. Rev. C. II. Ridding, Arthur Robinson, E. J. Taylor, F. R. Alderwick, H. E. Thomas, II. V. Page. T he renaissance of Gloucestershire cricket last season was really the renaissance of Dr. W. G. Grace. His superabundant energy and remarkable retention of his hitting powers could not but react upon the cricket of the eleven, and this in such a way that the Western County was successful in performing several noteworthy feats in 1895. With Dr. Edward Grace permanently retired from participation in first-class matches, with Woof long since gone, and writh Painter only available sometimes, it was natural that public interest should centre itself in such likely players as Capt. Luard, Messrs. G. L. Jessop, W. M . Hemingway, and R. W. Rice. But the memorable success of the younger Mr. Towmsend as a bowler (evoking from Punch the trite remark that Gloucestershire’s season’ s end was its Towns-end) was, next to the grandeur of Dr. Grace s achievements, the event of the year, with, in a lesser degree, the excellent all-round cricket of Mr. G. L. Jessop. Not for a long time has enthusiasm run higher in Gloucestershire than in 1895. Resu lts o f Matches. Matches played , 18 ; won , 8 ; drawn , 4 ; lost , 6. Opponents.
