James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

THE COUNTIES IN 1895 . 7 9 E S SE X * O fficers for 1895.— !*resident: Lord Carlingford. Hon . Treasurer: C. M. Tebbut. Committee : G. Buxton, W. H. Pemberton-Barnes, F. R. Pelly, R. Y. Bevan, R. Cook, A. J. Edwards, R. C. Gosling. F. W. Holton, G. Pagenstecher, W. Comerford, A. S. Johnston, A. P. Lucas, A. A. Timbrell, J. J . Read, C. R. Higgins. Secretary: O. R. Borradaile. T h o u g h they had not perhaps so brilliant a season as some supporters could have wished, the Essex eleven, on the whole, allowed the cares of their elevation to first-class County rank to sit lightly upon them ; and for a first season in such company the results might have been a great deal worse. The victory in the return with Yorkshire was, for example, gained by an exposition of capital all-round cricket. Again, at least a couple of matches that were admittedly “ good things ” for Essex had to be left unfinished owing to the unfavourable conditions. Their achievement in the Taunton match with Somerset, even allowing for the relative weakness of the latter’s bowling, must ever rank as one of the really “ b ig ” things of inter-County cricket. In the way of indi vidual performances Mead made great strides as a bowler, doing an immense amount of work and taking a large number of wickets. Pickett and Mr. Kortnght were both eminently useful with the ball, and Arkwright also bowled well on one or two occasions. Turning to the batting tables, we find Carpenter in rare run-getting form, his days of failure being rare indeed. We had hoped better things of Burns, though he made two or three good scores. Mr. Owen may be said to have batted up to his reputation, as did Mr. Kortright, and—when ever available—Mr. Lucas. Mr. McGaliey, and Carpenter were, on public form, the strongest Essex batsmen of the year. When in full strength the team were decidedly strong; rarely of late years has the County had so many good hitters available. R e su lts o f Matches.
