James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
78 LILLY WHITh’ s C 1 UCKKTEK 8 ' ANNUAL. (15) Derbyshire v. Lancashire. Derby, Aug. 19, 20 and 21. The County certainly seemed bent on finishing up the summer in noteworthy style. The Derbyshire stumper (VV. Storer) was again invaluable to his side by his powerful second innings of 108, though by fur the finest batting in the match was shown by Ward, with scores of 83 and 77. After a fine struggle Derbyshire got home by 63 runs. Derbyshire, 141 and 335; total, 479. Lancashire 177 and 239 ; total, 416. (16) Derbyshire v. Essex. Derby , A ug. 26, 27 and 28. The season flickered out in rain, and Derbyshire, as a “ forlorn hope, declared their innings closed with the certainty that their opponents, who could not possibly win, were in a desperate position. Bagsliaw, who was missed two or three times, was at the wickets under two hours, and he and Davidson added 100 in 90 minutes. The home eleven had plenty of bowling, wdiich was judiciously used; but time favoured the losers, and the game had to be drawn. Bennett did an extraordinary piece of bowling in the first innings of Essex. Derbyshire, 191 (8 wickets, innings closed). Essex, 87 and 177 (8 wickets); total, 264.
