James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
1,1l,LYWHITE’ S CKICKETEKS’ ANNEAL. C H A P T E R I I . THE COUNTIES iKl 1895. DERBYSHIRE. Derby County was not alone among the Shires in experiencing a fluctuating season in 1895. Without depending too much upon individual players they proved themselves a wonderfully powerful batting combi nation. In this department Chatterton was, as usual, to the tore, and did space permit we should like to indulge in an appreciation of his notable services to Derbyshire cricket. Bagshaw, too, did well with the bat, and his performance with Mr. Evershed in the return with Yorkshire should rank very high indeed. Mr. L. G. Wright, too, enjoyed a most pleasing success with the bat. Mr. Evershed w'us a capable and painstaking captain, and he also played several fine innings. Mr. Walker, when available, showed that he could bowl as well as ever on a wicket suiting him ; but the genuine successes in bowling were gained by Davidson, Porter, Hulme, and occasionally Bennett. Wm. Storer, who is one of quite the best batsmen among professional stumpers now, kept wicket in irreproachable fashion. Had time permitted Surrey would have been soundly beaten at the Oval.
