James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896
70 LILLYWHITES CRIC'KETEKR ANNUAL# (7) Players v. Gentlemen. July 8, 9 and 10. One of the greatest in a series of great matches—remarkable alike for the excellence of the teams, the magnificent wicket and weather, and for another marvellous performance by Dr. W. G. Grace. On his season’ s form behind the stumps and with the bat a place was given to Storer, the Derbyshire wicket-keeper, who amply justified his selection. All things considered the Gentlemen were fortunate in dismissing their formidable opponents for 231, in which 60 by ILayward, the young Surrey player, stood out in bold relief. The Amateurs would have fared exceeding ill but for the first pair, Messrs. Grace and Stoddart, whose remarkable stand of 151 for the first wicket gave rise to hopes of a huge score that were not realised. At the Professionals’ second attempt Storer’s 93 included fourteen 4’s. Richardson, for the last partnership, hit 43 in 22 minutes! Set the huge task of getting 336 against the finest bowling in the country, the Gentlemen accomplished the great feat of making 300 on a fiery wicket. The younger hands showed up the best, but so fiery was the pitch that Grace and O’Brien both received nasty blows. In all, 1,156 runs were realised for 40 wickets. PLAYERS. First Innings.
