James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1896

68 l illywh ite ’ s cricketers ’ annual . (5) Surrey v. Middlesex. June 24, 25 and 26. Middlesex consistent easily headed, —---- --------- , < „ . batsman’s first hundred for Surrey in a really important match. ±u iact il was a young players’ match, Street scoring a painstaking 60. The home team again responded with a moderate total, Mr. Stoddait, with .47 and 31, alone playing Richardson with confidence twice. Only needing 08 to win, Mr. Key sent in Abel and Maurice Read, with the laudable intention of letting the former complete his 1,000 runs. This the popular batsman did, Surrey winning easily by ten wickets. Surrey, 294 and 99 (no wicket); total, 393. Middlesex, 220 and 171; total, 391. (6) Cambridge University v. Oxford . Jxdij 4, 5 and 6 . On public form Oxford were held to have the best of the chances, but it did not turn out so. So good was the wicket throughout the three days that it is questionable whether the Cambridge eleven reaped much benefit from winning choice of innings. Indeed, it was a close race during the two first days, and the general opinion was that the Dark Blues would put on the necessary 300. This was reckoning, however, without the fine bowling of Lowe, who clean bowled five men. Another curious fact was that both of the highest individual aggregates were on the losing side. Foster, who had failed utterly on Thursday, gave a magnificent display of fine defence and free hitting, and totalled no fewer than 121 out of 190 from the bat. C. B. Fry, on the other hand, failed entirely both times, though his bowling wras the best on the side. Ihe opening of Oxfords innings on the third morning wras higlil v sensational, two wickets being clean bowled for five runs. It wras a good fight, but the winners played slightly the more consistent game. The attendance on all three days was even greater and more brilliant than usual. CAMBRIDGE. First Innings.
