Notts. Lord's , May 1 and 2. The ground was very soft, and lowr scoring all round w'as the consequence Indeed, Flowers, with 29 and 28, was by far the highest scorer on either side Notts were without Shrewsbury and Dixon. M.C.C. had not much batting but plenty of bowling, Martin, J. T. Hearne, and Woodcock sharing the honours. M.C.C. won by 37 runs. M.C.C., 76 and 84; total, 160. Notts, 58 and 65 ; total, 123. Overs. In this instance Marylebone put a very powerful eleven into the field, and aided by the County’s breakdown on going in again, scored a very handsome win. Mr. G. F. Vernon (55 and 51) and Chatterton (4 and 50) scored no fewer than 160 between them, the old Middlesex amateur’ s success being very popular. Woodcock’s fast deliveries came in for severe punishment, and wdien Leicester went in to face a big balance they broke dowm utterly against Hearne and Martin. Mr. Vernon’s second innings of 51 only took him 43 minutes. Mary le- bone won by 159 runs. M.C.C., 167 and 220; total, 387. Leicestershire. 108 and 120; total, 228. . . Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. Mr. F. W. Stocks (2nd inns. M.C.C.) 11 3 19 (3) M.C.C. and Ground v. Sussex. Lord's , May 9, 10 and 11. Noteworthy for the first of that marvellous series of performances which stamped Mr. Giface and Ranjitsinhji as the two batsmen of 189a. 1 his was. indeed, one of the most extraordinary matches of the year, terminating late on the third day, and realising an aggregate of 1,227 runs. W. G. failed the hist time, but few who saw his second score of 103 will forget it. So far imquanta j went, though, K . S. llau jits inh ji , for Sussex, beat the Doctor, making 7 1 the first time and 150 the second. Anything finer than his hitting has nc\tr been seen at Lord ’s. Other heavy scorers were, for the Club, ^torei (8- i d 0 ;»i and Mr. Heseltine (74), while the rival wicket-keeper,^Butt, emulated ^ o ie r l>> taking out his hat for 64. M.C.C. won by 19 runs only 1 M.C.C., 2J3 and 330 . total, 623. Sussex, 219 and 385; total, 604.
