THE CH IEF CR ICKETERS IN 189*5. 277 H ire , V. T. (Winchester and Oxford).—A very free left-handed bat and much improved in defence ; safe field and catch. N ewton , A. E .—Quite in the front rank of amateur wicket-keepers; useful bat, with more practice would be first-rate. P a l a ik e t , L. C. H. (Repton and Oxford).—Quite one of the best amateur bats men of the day; very correct and stylish with any number of good strokes; fair change bowler, and fine field. P alaiket , R. C. N. (Repton and Oxford).—Good and consistent bat, but much handicapped by accident to his knee; fine short slip ; bowls occasionally. P orch , R. 13. (Malvern).—First season for the County; very promising bat, and hard working field. P oynton , Dr. F. G. (Marlborough).—Steady and useful bat, and good field. R oe , W. N. (Cambridge).—Good free bat, in excellent form this year ; fair change bowler and field. S purway , R. P. (Haileybury).—A good sound bat though rather slow, and improved field. S tanley , H. T .—Defends his wicket well, but should learn to play freer cricket ; indifferent field. T rask , Surg.-Capt.— A very strong left-handed bat, generally a difficult wTicket to g e t ; bowled v. Lancashire at Taunton. W ickham , Rev. A. P. (Marlborough).—-As good as ever behind the sticks ; defends his wicket stubbornly, as his average shows. W oods , S. M. J.—Still one of the best amateur fast bowlers of the day ; an extraordinary field, and in great batting form this year. C ozens , F. T.—A good sound bat, hits very hard when se t ; a splendid out field. F urmlow , F. R.—The finest bat in the team ; a bit impatient, but when set most dangerous. H eath , A. 13. (Oxford).—One of the prettiest bats in the County ; very dangerous on fast wickets ; a keen cricketer; splendid field. M ainwarino , R ev . P. H.—A useful all-round cricketer; always gets runs, and on occasions a useful change bowder; a keen cricketer. M o t t , C. C. (Rugby).—A steady bat; very difficult wicket to get. S U R R E Y . J k p h s o n , D. I j . A. (Cambridge).—A good bat; a reliable field, and very u s e fu ] lob bowler; did not play lor the County in 1895. K e y , K. J. (Clifton and Oxford).—A good bat, with excellent defence and plenty of hit when required; moderate field ; had a fairly successful season in 1895, and captained the eleven with great judgment and success. I j EVE s o n - G o w e r , H. D. (W i n c h e s t e r and Oxford), L e w i s , R. P. (Winchester and Oxford), D ruce , W. G. (Marlborough and Cambridge), and D ruce , N. F. (Marlborough and Cambridge), also play for Surrey. R ead , W. W .—Still one of the best amateur batsmen of the d a y ; plays very straight, and hits all round with great freedom ; a fine field anywhere, and can also keep wicket; played fine cricket tow ards the end of the season.
